OutdoorLads is a charity that runs outdoor activities for gay, bi men and trans men across the UK and further afield, with a mission to improve both physical and mental health.

Their friendly and welcoming events cover everything from hiking, climbing and scrambling to biking, canoeing and camping – all run by passionate and dedicated volunteers.

Trail magazine recently caught up with OutdoorLads chairman Peter Walter to find out a little more about this amazing organisation, why it was formed, and how you can get involved.

What is OutdoorLads?

“OutdoorLads is a charity that runs outdoor activities all over the UK. We aim to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of gay, bi and trans men and we have a great time doing so.”

Where did the idea for the group come from?

“Around 14 years ago a bunch of gay guys set up a simple web page to make it easier for them to arrange weekends together in the hills, and now we have more than 2,000 full members, 7,000 pay-as-you-go members, and 200 volunteers. ”

Tell us about the types of events you run…

“We organise 1,500 events each year – including hiking, camping, indoor and outdoor climbing, road and mountain biking - as well as trips to Nepal, Africa and Europe. Over 85% of our members says the events are very friendly and welcoming, and 90% of members have challenged themselves to try something new since joining. Most have also made new friends and feel more positive and energised about the future”

Do I need to be an experienced walker to take part?

“No. All our events are clearly graded and there are lots of easy walks for people with little or no experience. Whatever your experience you will always find our events are friendly and welcoming.”

How can I get involved?

“ You can sign up for free and browse all our events at www.outdoorlads.com.”
